MEET THE TRAINER:
I thought about doing a regular, run-of-the-mill ABOUT page, but it felt a lot like completing an online dating profile. I decided to go with an interview format to give you a good feel of who I am!
Why dogs? What do you like about them?
I wouldn't say I like dogs - I LOVE them! They're so much fun and each dog is so individual. I thoroughly enjoy that having a dog training business has given me the opportunity to meet and get to know such a variety of pupper personalities. And I just can't help but smile when I see them out and about or walking in the neighborhood!
Did you have any pets/dogs growing up?
Oh, of course! We almost always had a dog when I was growing up; the house didn't quite feel like home without one running around. We had some fish for awhile, but a dog was/is a staple family member!
Do you have any pets/dogs now?
I do, yes! I've got a little whipper-snapper named Ruby running our household! She's featured in the pictures on this page and makes appearances on SideKick Dog Training's social media pages pretty often (because she's cute and knows it)!
What made you want to become a dog trainer?
I was working in a position that I wasn't happy with; it paid the bills, but it didn't hold my interest and I knew it wasn't something that would keep me challenged and motivated for very long. So, I decided to learn how to make a living out of what I'm passionate about: dogs! The more I looked into it, the more I enjoyed learning about dogs, how dogs learn, dog behavior, modern dog training techniques, etc. The rest is history from there, I guess!
What is meant when it says on your website, "Better training through better relationships."?
When I first started this dog training business, I came up with that phrase as a tagline or business motto. Since then, though, the phrase has really grown to encompass so much more. It perfectly symbolizes my training philosophy and my approach to training - with my own dog and with my clients' dogs! I 100% believe that there's a cyclical relationship between learning to communicate with your dog (training) and building a solid history of consistency and trust (relationship) with your dog.
What do you do in your free time?
I like camping, hiking, swimming, and getting outside during the Summer and hibernating with a pair of knitting needles and a Netflix show during the Winter months. I also enjoy cooking and baking, and, in general, making things (a decent portion of the gifts I give are handmade). I've got a soft spot for my growing collection of house plants and my book shelves seem to be shrinking...I also teach group classes (Puppy ABCs and Dog Manners) at the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS)!
What are some things you like to do with your SideKick?
Ruby has a lot of favorite activities! We like playing with her tennis ball, which usually means a game of chase-and-be-chased or catch; when our busy schedules allow, we like getting off the beaten path at some of the nearby parks; or we like snuggling on the couch!
Ruby wouldn't be a trainer's dog if we didn't also work on training; she is more than happy to be my guinea pig when I'm trying out new techniques or want to try teaching her something new. But, it's definitely not all work and no play! We earned our Novice Trick Dog title in June of 2019 and are loosely working toward our Intermediate title - which has been a lot of fun and exciting as we both stretch our skills on new things!
I'm an open book - shoot me a message!
I'd be happy to give you a better idea of who you might be inviting to work with you and your SideKick!
